Hormones control pretty much every bodily function in your body, from your mood to your hunger, and the food you eat has a direct impact on your hormones.
Here’s a list of bodily functions under the influence of your hormones.
Sensation of feeling full after a meal (leptin)
Fat storage (insulin)
Fat burning (glucagon)
Feeling sleepy (melatonin)
Feeling loved (oxytocin)
The hormone insulin is a master regular that controls the delivery of nutrients and other hormones to target organs and storage depots in the body.
Excessive insulin production (as a result of eating a carb-loaded diet) prevents the burning of stored body fat and promotes the conversion of the food you consume into body fat.
Chronically high levels of insulin (that can result from a carb-loaded diet) can lead to insulin resistance, which basically means that your body becomes desensitised to insulin’s signals. Insulin resistance is bad news for your liver and your pancreas and if left unchecked, can lead to type 2 diabetes, infertility and heart disease.
Carb-dense foods such as bread, pasta, rice, cake, sweet biscuits, soft drinks and lollies, just to name a few, cause excessively elevated insulin levels.
The key to effortless weight loss is to eat foods that will not cause hormonal imbalances.
What can you eat instead of carb-dense processed food?
Foods rich in healthy fats!
Healthy fats have very little effect on our metabolism or our hormones. Fat tastes amazing and leaves you feeling satisfied after a meal. Healthy fats include animal products, avocados, coconut products, olive oil, eggs, butter and full-fat dairy.
carb-loaded diet = excessive insulin production = fat storage, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, infertility and increased heart disease risk.
low carb/fat-loaded diet = effortless weightloss, promotes lean muscle, has anti-aging properties and promotes overall healthy living.
Whenever I feel like having a weak moment, I remember these basic equations and this can be enough to keep me on track.
